TYRE SAFETY CHECKS

To stop a car within a certain stopping distance, brakes and tyres are equally responsible. But as a driver, we think that brakes are the only component that brings a vehicle to a complete halt and forget about the tyres of our cars.

True, brakes initiate the action, but it is the friction that the tyres offer against the road which decides the travel distance of the car after the application of the brakes. In a study, it was found that many of the accidents that happened in the past years were due to poor tyre conditions.

The maintenance of the tyres in these situations was pretty easy, but negligence led to these accidents. Before leaving home, one should make sure that the car is in the best shape to provide the ultimate level of safety. Our experts know that and hence, offer you the following essential maintenance tips for your tyres that will prevent you from unwanted circumstances:

Tyre Pressure check

One of the easiest, yet the most ignored thing about tyre maintenance is the tyre pressure. As a driver, you should be in the habit of getting the pressure in your tyres checked regularly.

A tyre without adequate pressure leads to the wearing of the tyre, loss of control over the car, and also blowouts that will cause your tyre to go completely flat in the middle of the road. With adequate pressure, you also save significantly on the fuel.

When checking the pressure of tyres, keep the following things in mind:

1. Don't try to measure a heated up tyre. Make sure that your vehicle was not driven for some time before the pressure check.

2. For correct tyre pressure, look into the vehicle manual and get the tyres inflated accordingly.

3. Remove the valve caps, and then fill the air in the tyres, keeping an eye on the pressure mentioned on the filler machine.

4. Put the valve caps back on again.

The tyre with correct pressure will help you much on the road with safety, while also facilitating cost-cutting.

Tread Depth

Tread is responsible for imparting traction and control to the vehicle on the roads. Various types of tyres have different tread patterns. Like tread grooves in the winter tyres are deeper than that are there on the summer tyres.

While maintaining safety on the road, the depth of the tread plays an important role. Experts suggest that one should go for retreading when the depth falls below 3mm.

The government in the UK has made it illegal to drive a car with the tyre tread below 1.6mm, and you can be fined heavily for breaking the rule. You can check the tread of your tyres for free. Just take a 20p coin and put it in three different places in the grooves of the main tread. If the coin's outer band is visible when seen from the sides, then you are in need of retreading.

Worn Out Tyres

Tyres that have a damaged sidewall can cause blowouts out of nowhere, and will often leave you with a dangerous and challenging situation on the road. One should always check the tyres for bulges and severe cuts on the walls of the tyres. These defects can lead to punctures and blowouts in the future, which can prove to be catastrophic at high speeds or in the middle of busy traffic.
